I’ve been out of social media as a whole for about three or four weeks now and in that time, what I’ve learned is this: the net does not need me. Just as I suspected, in spite of all of the awesome conversation that’s come of it and in spite of being told I inspire people from time to time, if I drop off the face of the earth (so to speak) without a word, it disturbs no one.

It’s a humbling experience. For a week or a month (it has to be longer than a day), just drop off the net without a word. No fanfare, no announcement. Just be gone. After that, observe.

Yesterday, a friend of mine said that if I didn’t exist, the world would be a worse place for it. Looking at the results since being “offline”, I’m inclined to disagree; “out of sight, out of mind” couldn’t be more true. I — and you for that matter — are, on a grand scale, about as significant as flakes of dead skin.

Connect. Reach out. Encourage. Definitely do all of this, but it’s seems nonsense — more now than ever — to think that if you do enough of that, the world will skip a beat if you’re gone. It simply isn’t so. The hope then, is to be awesome for the sake of doing so, regardless of what comes of it.
